Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthiest Were Wrong

It's time for Middle Class Tax Relief Instead

The Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans are expiring this year, and the question of what to do with them is on the front burner in Washington.

Annie Kuster opposed the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest, and her opponent in the Democratic primary, Katrina Swett, supported them.

  1. Swett Supported Bush Tax Cuts: “Swett was the 2002 Democratic nominee for the 2nd District seat, losing to then-incumbent Charles Bass, who is running for the GOP nomination this fall. Back then, she supported the Bush tax cuts and also backed the invasion of Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein.” [Nashua Telegraph, 7/14/10; Union Leader, 10/29/02]

  2. In NH, Top 1% of Incomes Received 36% of the Tax Cut Benefits. According to a state-by-state analysis by the Citizens for Tax Justice, the top 1% of New Hampshire income-earners (who average $1.23M in annual income) received 36.2% of the benefits of the Bush tax cut, adding up to over $58,000 apiece. The average New Hampshire citizen, earning just under $40,000, received less than $750 in benefits. [Citizens for Tax Justice analysis, 6/13/01. Dear Mr. President,

The Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans have wrecked our economy and driven our nation deep into debt.

Here in New Hampshire, 36.2% of the benefit of those Bush tax cuts went to the top 1% of income earners – people whose average income is over $1.2 million.

We support tax relief for the middle class – not multimillionaires.

Sincerely,
